What is Silk?

A standout feature of the 511 lies in its Silk/Texture control, a refinement of the original Silk circuit developed for the Portico series mic preamplifiers. In its initial iteration, the Silk circuit featured a binary switch —either on or off — introducing a predetermined, pleasing harmonic saturation to the unit's output stage.

Taking a innovative leap forward, the Texture knob on the 511 is engineered to fine-tune the actual quantity of harmonic content derived from the source material. The operational principle involves diminishing negative feedback across the output transformer while simultaneously adjusting the frequency response of this feedback. This intricate interplay within the Silk/Texture circuit delivers the enchanting, musical saturation reminiscent of Rupert's legendary vintage designs.
